Provide web search stats

Description (last modified by grenersen@…) (diff)

It would be useful to log and have an admin page for seeing most common search terms, search terms that provided no results, most used category for filtering, number of times a user clicked on a result within the first N, how many times people actually click on the second page of results.

I wonder if we can just use a specially formatted log4net appender for this?

I would rather avoid creating a new DB dependency as it removes the esay install aspects.

We could have a seperate lucene index for it as then editors / admins can search in it.

The source:EPiCode.PerformanceLoggerModule uses a custom log4net appender for logging request information to a database. It works with SQLite and SQL Server (for bigger installations). Logging search words would not produce too much data, so SQLite would probably work well.

SQLite does not work with load balanced environments, but SQL Server does, so just run a db script and change the connectionstring.

Not sure about the need to search for search words though. Some of the stats I'd like to see:

  • Top 10 (all time)
  • Top 10 (last week)
  • Top <n> (custom timespan)
  • Candidates for synonyms (advanced stuff)
  • Searches with no (or few) results

To get really useful search statistics, some sort of click handling from the search result is needed (detecting that people actually find what they look for). This could also be used for a page plugin with information about search words that lead to the page. Perhaps for a later version though.

Is there any work being done on this? Together with synonyms and search suggestions this is a highly appreciated feature that could raise the overall impression. I would like to see a nice GUI and for CMS 6 a cool gadget in Site Center.
